SJM_SouthernExposure_0320_SouthernExposure_11_08 3 / 3 / 20 3 : 06 PM Page 6 WHAT’S ENTERTAINING US Mullica Hill’s own John Brancy , a baritone opera singer , recent - ly won his first Grammy — for Best Opera Recording — for his lead performance in The Fantastic Mr . Fox with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project ( BMOP ) . Even as a young child in elemen - tary school , Brancy was a singer . Starting out in the kids ’ choir , he grew his voice throughout his public school education , being a member of every choir and musical production . By the time he was 17 his voice was so developed that it gave him a chance to get into Juilliard for opera singing . South Jersey Magazine spoke with Brancy about his experience with The Fantastic Mr . Fox and what it was like to win a Grammy . What led you to being involved in The Fantastic Mr . Fox ? This is an opera by Tobias Picker and they felt that I was the right person to play the character and the vocal part felt almost like it was written for me because it was quite high but also pretty low . It was a really great experience to be able to record that opera . What was it like winning your first Grammy ? I had some hope that we could win going in but I was very realistic . I’ve done a lot of competitions in my life and I know the feel - ing of losing as well as winning but that feeling of winning struck me so hard when they called Tobias Picker’s last name — they were calling the winners by the last name of the project . My mom didn’t even under - stand who won and my dad was like , ‘ He just won a Grammy . ’ The Grammy is for my music teachers throughout the years who helped pave the way for me , I want to dedicate it to them . What does the future hold for you ? I am actually opening a show in Victoria BC , Canada along with doing a bunch of concert work and operas . I will do an opera in the Des Moines Metro Opera in the summer and I will also have some work with the Boston Symphony Chamber Players in April . I’m planning on releasing my second album , The Journey Home , too . I am planning on coming home to give a homecoming recital . The date is May 8 and we are planning on doing it at the Toscano Theater at Clearview [ Regional High School ] . The show will be in support of the public music education program and keeping music and art in public schools . SOUTH JERSEY MAGAZINE volume 16 issue 12 SouthJerseyMagazine.com | 13
